Randal Arvilla is a Sydney-based Costa Rican-Australian artist and a free-lance certified International Tour Director and Guide. Arvilla has extended experience in tourism and has travelled the world as a professional tour director, step-on guide, shore excursions’ staff and as an on-board cruise consultant for top of the line cruising where attention to detail and great service is key. In private tours Arvilla has guided high-profile business people, Ambassadors and Royalty.
As a freelance Tour Director and Guide, Arvilla works professionally in cultural, soft-naturalism and art tourism, with knowledge of history, art and culture, and the "touristy" when needed. On his tours with Arvilla guests enjoy and understand the visual, cultural and natural manifestations of yesterday and today, yet he connects with the history of the destination, understanding that past and present walk with each other. Randal Arvilla’s varied and lengthy tourism experience and art background makes him an ideal tour guide for your Australian Experience. Arvilla leads tours in English and Spanish and is currently polishing up his Italian.
Arvilla studied Painting at the National Art School in Sydney and holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of San Francisco. Arvilla was awarded the St. Vincent’s and National Art School’s Painting Exhibition Award (2011) and was Runner-Up in the John Olsen Figure Drawing Prize (National Art School, 2011). Arvilla has been an exhibiting finalist in the Fleurieu Food and Wine Art Prize (2016), the Chippendale New World Art Prize (2016), Fisher’s Ghost Award (2015), St. George Art Award (2014, 2012), and Waverley Art Prize (2012). In Nov 2016 Arvilla held his solo show “Encáustica Contemporánea” in Sydney Australia.
In his Art work Arvilla, considers the history of “Encaustic Painting” - which is an ancient painting technique first used to render likenesses on Roman-Egyptian portrait sarcophagi, through a contemporary lens of colour and abstraction, whilst exploring nuanced personal themes of cultural identity, memory, loss and place. Touring the art and cultural world in the Baltic, Mediterranean, Asia, South and North Africa, the 3 Americas, the Caribbean, Australia and New Zealand, the Arctic and Antarctic, Arvilla has directed in places such as The Pyramids in Cairo, The Valley of the Kings in Egypt, Petra in Jordan, The Hermitage (St. Petersburg), The Louvre (Paris), Saatchi Gallery (London), The Great Wall of China, The Shanghai Museum, Tikal (Guatemala) and Chichen Itza (Mexico), the volcanoes and rain forests of Costa Rica, Uluru, Kata Tjuta (Australia), numerous Italian cities and the Venice Biennale as well as world wide local markets, nature tours and art related tours among numerous other historical destinations and unique experiences.
